No More Brunch at Pix

BreakfastGuy on Jun 24th 2008

Just talked to the nice folks at Pix and confirmed that they no longer do brunch on the weekends. It was kind a of a one-man show, and that man is no longer there. A shame. And now, since I’m giving away chapters that won’t be in the book anymore, here’s what I had written about Pix:

RIP, Hannah Bea’s Poundcake and More

BreakfastGuy on Jun 24th 2008

Sad news from MLK Boulevard last week — sad, but not shocking.

Hannah Bea’s will close for good on June 30, after a going-away party on June 28. See their website for details.

The place hardly ever had anybody in it when I went by, and while the staff was always friendly, and the poundcakes amazing, the food never struck me as all that great. So I can’t say I was surprised.

Top 10 Reasons to Start Your Day with Breakfast

BreakfastGuy on Jun 16th 2008

I got this from Everyday Wellness Clinic:

1, Lose weight because you’ll eat less the rest of the day.

2, Lower your cholesterol. I might add here that I don’t think bacon helps in this regard.

3, Increase longevity with whole grains in the morning rather than refined breakfast cereal. It’s good for your heart, blood sugar and insulin.

4, Keep Your Energy Smooth, which sounds like a jazz band. But what they’re saying is don’t eat a bunch of sugar at breakfast and you won’t have “energy spikes, followed by a sluggish crash.” Speaking of which, I need a nap.

5, Maintain metabolism because if you skip breakfast, it plays games with your insulin levels.

6, Boost your brain power. They didn’t really explain this one, but it sounds good.

7, Get your nutrients up front because you might not get a chance to later on – unless you eat breakfast again!

8, Avoid sugar cravings which, again, lead to the whole spike/crash thing. Include proteins and healthy fats to “keep those sugary snack at bay.” I might add that French Toast doesn’t apply here. Dangit!

9, Stay calm. Apparently skipping breakfast “is linked with higher stress hormones, irritability and emotional arousal.” I could say the same about writing breakfast books.

10, Set the mood for the day. “A bit of calm in the morning sets a positive influence in the day,” they say. With this, finally, I agree and can speak from experience. I do love to sit down and start my day with some French toast and bacon. Oh, wait …
