Breakfast Memories: Basta’s Brunch

BreakfastGuy on Nov 24th 2009

“Breakfast Memories,” if you’re new here, is my way of giving away what I can no longer sell. Once a place in the book closes or quits doing brunch, I figure I might as well give away the chapter I wrote about it.

The theory is that you get to be entertained (I hope), I get to be read, and if you like it enough, you just might decide to buy the book, or one of my hiking/camping books. (Use coupon code “BACONTIME” for free shipping on all orders.) By the way, if you don’t want to buy online, check out where you can find the Stumptown Scribes market booth.

This week’s Breakfast Memory is Basta’s Trattoria on NW 21st. Basta’s is still around, and still very highly recommended for their Italian fare, cool digs, and happy-hour prices. But their brunch passed away quietly, which I should have seen coming, since nobody was ever there.

Anyway, a short time ago, in a neighborhood not too far away …

It’s Vegan Week on the Radio Show

BreakfastGuy on Nov 20th 2009

Join me this week for a wide-ranging discussion of vegan breakfasts in Portland, with Jess and Webly from StumptownVegans. We cover everything from “live” food to waffles, from old standards like Cup and Saucer and Paradox to newer faves like Hungry Tiger Too and the revamped Juniors. Plus, there are a lot of references to tofu scrambles!

That’s Friday at 1 p.m., on PDX.FM. Just click the link at the top to listen live, or watch here for the podcast later in the afternoon.

And by the way, when you read this, I’ll be in Italy, so I’m out of touch.

Breakfast Memories: Acadia Brunch

BreakfastGuy on Nov 17th 2009

Last week, as part of my “Breakfast Memories” program, I shared the chapter I wrote on Roux, which closed early in 2009. This week we’re continuing the theme with the chapter from Acadia.

Acadia is still with us, I’m happy to say, but their brunch is not. And that’s a shame. I’m pretty sure the most entertaining research trip I had in two years was the trip to Acadia. Besides, where are we supposed to get Bananas Foster French Toast now?

So enjoy, and if you enjoy it enough to want a whole lot more like it, buy the book, or one of my others on hiking and camping. (Use coupon code “BACONTIME” for free shipping on all orders.) By the way, if you don’t want to buy online, check out where you can find the Stumptown Scribes market booth.
