Breakfast in Bridgetown

Ken Gordon, co-owner of Kenny and Zukes, joins me to talk about his Jewish delicatessen at SW 11th and Stark. We cover everything from his history to the deli scene in Portland to how to make Pastrami and what K&Z serves for breakfast — all while I stuff my face with a pastrami sandwich that’s so tender I could gum it. I just hope I didn’t smack too much into the microphone!

Well, after an amazing response — check out the gallery! — we finally have two winners in the Breakfast Porn Photo Contest. Yes, two — I couldn’t narrow it down to one, especially since all my judges picked different ones, pretty much. But I gave the most weight to the opinions of Kenny and Zuke, who were nice enough to give an amazing gift certificate to the grand prize winner.

And so, in second place, is Steven Lenhart, with this shot of corned beef hash. Steven will get a signed copy of my book.

And the winner of our grand prize — a signed copy of my book and a meal for four at Kenny and Zuke’s —  is Veronica Vadakan, with a shot she called “A seductive curl of bacon atop a spicy hash from Caffe Pallino.” And by the way, I’ve never even heard of Caffe Pallino, but the Yelp reviews sound decent.

Midnight tonight is the deadline for the Breakfast in Bridgetown “Breakfast Porn” Photo Contest. Grand Prize is a signed copy of my book plus a very generous gift certificate to Kenny and Zukes. Kenny and Zuke will, in fact, be judging the contest, and Ken himself will announce the winner on my radio show on Friday at 1 p.m.

When I first saw this, I thought it meant “recovery” like 12-step recovery, aka a clean and sober brunch. Um, no. The Delta Cafe down on Woodstock is doing a special brunch that day with Smoked Brisket Hash, Eggs Sardou and Fresh Beignets with lemon compote. Also a build-your-own bloody mary bar, champagne cocktails, and $1 red beers. So much for that clean and sober thing!

That’s 10 to 4 on Friday, January 1. I might have to run by to fill up before watching my beloved Ole Miss Rebels in the Cotton Bowl.

The regular bunch menu is on their website, and here’s what they sent for 1-1-10:

Brioche French Toast with Berry Compote

Served with organic maple syrup and whipped cream

Smoked Brisket Hash

Served with two poached eggs, potatoes, onions, & peppers

Biscuits & Gravy

Served with chicken gravy and two eggs

Eggs Sardou

Two poached eggs over artichoke hearts, creamed spinach. Served with hollandaise sauces and choice of grits or potatoes.

Baked Eggs

Two eggs baked with cream, coriander, roasted peppers, zucchini and onion.  Choice of grits or potatoes.

Southern Scramble

Eggs with andouille sausage, crawfish, onions, peppers, garlic and celery. Served with grits and toast

Basket of Beignets

Served with lemon curd

White Cheddar Grits

With toasted pecans and organic maple syrup

Just found out that Eola Hills Winery in Rickreall does Sunday brunches. They’re taking a little holiday break, but there’s one on Dec. 13 and Dec. 20. Sounds like a good time — details here.
