About the Author, Paul Gerald

BreakfastGuy on Jul 7th 2008

Paul Gerald has been a professional writer since the mid-1980s. He started in sports, writing for papers in Dallas, Santa Barbara and his original hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. He branched out when he was hired by the Memphis Flyer, where he dabbled in news, reviews, editorial, humor, and whatever else was needed.

After moving to Oregon in 1996, he wrote travel articles for the Flyer for about 10 years, and is now one of the paper’s food writers. He still does some sports writing, mostly for the Willamette Week in Portland, his new and much-preferred hometown.

His most-read work is certainly his hiking guide to the Portland area, 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of Portland. The third edition of this was published in 2007 by Menasha Ridge Press of Birmingham, Alabama — as was Paul’s second title for Menasha, Day and Overnight Hikes on Oregon’s Pacific Crest Trail.

Since he started working on Breakfast in Bridgetown, which he will self-publish in summer 2008, he has submitted reviews, articles and draft chapters to PortlandFoodAndDrink.com, Willamette Week, and LivePDX.com.

A few other random things you might want to know about Paul include that he used to work in the commercial fishing fleet in Alaska, he’s a serious Deadhead, and he’s lucky enough to inhabit the coolest house in the city of Portland.

thought your book was a great idea, but when i opened it & discovered my favorite breakfast spot was not listed, I put it back on the shelf. the Buffalo Gap has been serving some of the finest beakfasts in PDX for over 20 years— their breakfasts are tasty, generous, fairly priced, and judging by their popularity, Portlanders agree with me! the Gap has been one of Portland’s staples since 1974— they must be doing something right!!! with your ties to Willamette Week, i’m very surprised you ignored it. guess i’ll take my $20 & go have breakfast with my better half at the Gap— sorry.

    Marie,

Sorry I missed your favorite; I didn’t ignore it as much as I simply failed to get there. Like some other places, I heard about it, but nobody sold me on it enough to get me over there before I had to close out the first edition. But there will be more editions, and the Gap will be in the next one.

Besides, if you already know about the Gap, why would that stop you from buying the book? I mean, there’s 95 places in there!
